Before an archer even begins to shop for a compound bow, it is good to have an idea of the kind and size of arrows to be used. Each archer has his or her own draw length, and some bows are better suited for certain draw lengths than others. Therefore, archers should ensure they purchase bows that will accommodate their particular draw length, and then select arrows that suit that draw length. Some types of arrows are more suitable for target practice or hunting than others. This means an archer should have an idea of what he or she plans to do with a bow. Below is a guide to choosing the right arrows for compound bow.

The first thing an archer needs to know when picking arrows is their draw length. One way of finding out their draw length is by applying the arm-span method. This involves standing up straight and stretching arms out on both sides. One should ensure that the arms are parallel to the floor while the shoulders are not pulled together. Then, using a tape measure, someone else measures the distance between the middle fingertips of both hands. By dividing this measurement by 2.5, an individual has his draw length. For someone having draw length of 70 inches, for example, then the most accurate draw length for him or her is 28 inches.

Another method of determining the draw length is the wall measurement. All an individual has to do is face a wall sideways, place the fist of his or her bow arm against the wall, while maintaining the arms parallel to the floor. The next step involves the individual turning his or her head in a way that it faces the wall. One should imagine holding a bow since this position should appear as if he is aiming at the wall. When in position, another person measures the distance between the mouth’s corner and the wall; with the measurement being the draw length. Adding an inch or two to the draw length will enable an individual get the ideal arrow length for him or her. Since most archers have a draw length of 28 inches, the best arrows for them are those ranging from 29 to 30 inches in length.

A commonly asked question is how heavy the arrows for a compound bow should be. It is all a matter of whether someone should use heavier or lighter bows. In order to determine this, an individual should know what he or she intends to do with the bow and arrows. An arrow used for hunting has to penetrate an animal’s fur, skin, flesh, and in some cases the bone, so as to make a kill shot. Whether or not an arrow can do this will depend on the kinetic energy and arrowhead used. The heavier the arrow, the more the kinetic energy it possesses when striking the target. Using lighter arrows is recommended for target practice. This is because target practice arrows only have to go through a small layer of compressed form or cardboard, something that does not require a lot of kinetic energy.
